Worksop West

Worksop West

Worksop West signal box’s down home signals. Wednesday 26th July 1989

Worksop Goods Yard signal box was located by the Up Main line alongside Gateford Road underbridge, and was a Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway Company type 1 design that opened circa 1874. A replacement 26 lever Great Central Railway Company frame was fitted and was extended to 28 levers by 1906. The signal box was renamed Worksop West by the Great Central Railway Company sometime after 1897 although by the late 1950s the signal box carried a Worksop West Junction nameboard. A Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Company Limited manufactured 28 lever Great Central Railway Company frame (numbered 1A, 1-27) was installed in 1928. The signal box closed at 18:33 on 25th April 1998 when control passed to Worksop signal box and after gradually becoming more derelict was moved to Swindon in the mid-2000s

The signals (left to right) 12 signal (Down Main To Down Reception No2), 11 signal (Down Main To Down Reception No1) and 1 signal (Down Main Home) with Shireoaks East Junction signal box 1R signal (Down Main Outer Distant) below it are carried on a London & North Eastern Railway Company design three doll bracket on an all-welded main stem. The doll carrying the Down Main home signal has a white diamond which indicates to the driver that his train is occupying a track circuit that indicates his presence to the signalman

On 19th August 1973 Shireoaks East Junction signal box was provided with a new down main outer distant signal (1R signal) below Worksop West signal box’s down main home signal. At the same time Shireoaks East Junction signal box 1 signal (down main distant) located beneath Worksop West signal box’s down main starting signal was renamed the down main inner distant

11 signal was formerly a full size semaphore arm and was replaced by a miniature arm sometime after June 1982
