How Vitamins Contribute to Overall Health


Vitamins are complex organic substances that are required to carry out the daily functions of the body in order to maintain it in good health and bodily functioning. A well balanced diet is extremely essential in order to cater to the daily requirements of vitamins and minerals in the body and take care of any kind of deficiency that may lead to serious health problems in the future.

Basically, there are thirteen essential vitamins that are required by a human body for its proper growth and development. These allow the body to produce essential hormones and enzymes that are required to convert food into energy, which in turn is required by the different parts of the body to grow and develop.

A large number of chemical reactions occur in our body and require vitamins to support them. Inside the body, the vitamins are separated into fat soluble and water soluble vitamins. Fat soluble vitamins are stored inside the body and water soluble are treated by the body on daily basis.

All types of vitamins play a key role in keeping the body healthy, efficient and stress free. The following are some of the key vitamins consumed by our body in order to keep it in an efficiently working state:

1) Fat Soluble Vitamins:
These are stored inside the body and are absorbed along with fats in the small intestine when required. It includes vitamins of category A, D, E and K. Eggs, meat, fish, green vegetables etc. are rich sources of these vitamins. These vitamins are stored for longer durations inside the body and are not as useful as the water soluble vitamins that are unnecessarily required by the body at regular intervals. People who are low on fat and a healthy nutritious diet are usually deficient of these vitamins.

• Vitamin A:
It plays an essential role in keeping the hair and skin healthy. It's a powerful antioxidant and keeps the immune system healthy. Is also supports bone and cell growth. Deficiency in vitamin A can lead to various problems related to skin and eyes.

• Vitamin D:
It helps in development and maintenance of healthy bones. It is usually utilized in two forms by the body ie vitamin D2 and D3. Vitamin D2 is found naturally in the diet whereas vitamin D3 is obtained when our skin is exposed to sunlight. A deficiency in this can lead to growth problems, muscle weakness, bone fracturing and many more.

• Vitamin E:
It is the most essential vitamin in the human body. It acts as an antioxidant and protects vitamin A + C ie RBC's + EFA's from damaging within the body. It has some major benefits including:
a) Enhancing the immune system functioning
b) Lowering risk of heart disease
c) Prevention of prostate cancer
d) And many more.
Deficiency in this is usually found in people who have difficulty in absorbing fats.

• Vitamin K:
It helps in production of clotting agents that is used by the body to heal wounds.

2) Water Soluble Vitamins:
These are the type of vitamins that easily dissolves in water and include vitamins such as vitamin C and B-Complex. These do not get stored in the body and are consumed in a short period of time except for B-complex vitamins which are stored in liver.

• B-Complex Vitamins:
These are stored inside every cell of the body and are used to obtain energy from the food by combining with enzymes of certain types. These help in maintaining:
a) A healthy nervous system
b) A healthy skin
c) A good vision
d) RBC's formation
e) And many more

• Vitamin C:
It is an essential vitamin that regulates our blood pressure and reduces our cholesterol levels. Vitamin C helps in maintaining a good immune system. It helps the body fight against infections or illness. It also helps in the synthesis of collagen that is an essential component of bones, teeth, muscles and blood vessels.

Therefore, for building a healthy body, the importance of these essential vitamins can not be neglected. But, due to an unhealthy diet plan, people are missing out these essential vitamins that are mandatory for the proper growth and development of the body. General Health Tips


The health of a person will always be his greatest wealth. Ask any person and he will tell you why he would always prefer to be wanting in material things provided he is blessed with good health. The importance of good health should be taught to children while they are still young so that when they older, they have already gotten accustomed to a healthy lifestyle.

Some parents give everything to their children and let them eat unhealthy food. They reason out that they can allow their children to eat anything they want since they are still young and they will have all the time in the world to take care of their health when they grow old. This seems to be a wrong notification because a child lives by what has been taught since he was a baby. Thus, a child who has been raised eating unhealthy food will always have a yen for such type of food even when he is already a grown up.

Every responsible parent should teach his children the general health tips that they should live by from childhood as well as when they become older. Training children to live right and to eat healthy food can make the difference in how they are going to take care of their health later on in life. It is always wise to teach children to drink plenty of water instead of carbonated beverage while they are still young. Water is an elixir of health. Health Reform Is a Wake Up Call for Nurses


It's time for nurses to wake up. The cry for health reform is a call to nursing. It is a call to return to healing, to health, to wellness.

Florence Nightingale's mission for nurses is to help people learn how to get and stay well. It was through observing the person and their responses to treatments and making adjustments through nursing interventions that helped people get well. It was not instituting more medicine. In fact, she said, "nursing and medicine must never be mixed up. It spoils both …" "

When nursing was instituted in the hospital setting in the 1800's, more people got well. They did not heal from adding more doctors. It is through the nursing process: interaction, observation, assessment, intervention and evaluation that Florence Nightingale learned and touted her nurses to improve health outcomes. People were dying in hospitals. When nurses were introduced more people got well.

Medicine alone does not make us well. It is only in the personalization and integration of medical interventions for unique individuals that treatments can have their intended effect. Without that personalization, without the knowledgeable human-to-human interface between the nurse and the person, healing is intermittent at best. At its worst people continue to suffer and even die.

The drive for profits over the well-being of people has created a crisis in health care today. While the numbers of medications and treatments are rising at astronomical rates fewer nurses are at the bedside where they can make the healing difference.

Our health care system has forgotten the lesson that Florence Nightingale taught us decades ago. It is not more medicine that makes people well. It is the integration and personalization of treatments for unique individuals; it is nursing that makes the difference.

Research is proving over and over again that when more nurseries are at the bedside opportunities improve. It's time for nurses and nursing leaders in every institution to reclaim the professional integrity and autonomy of nursing. It is time for nurses in their primary role as advocates for patients to hear the plea for health reform as a "wake up call" to re-institute healing through the nursing process back into our health care model.

Nurses must stop being oppressed and nursing leaders must stop being marginalized by a system that has forgotten their true value. It's time to wake up, to step up, to speak out and to articulate clearly how nursing must be re-instituted in the health care process for healing outcomes to improve.

The drive for profits must not longer override the needs of people in our health care system. It is nurses, beginning with Nightingale, who have always championed this message. Patient advocacy is one of the hallmarks and missions of nursing. It is the reason we are at the top of the polls as the most trusted professionals for eleven years.

The wake-up call has been sounded by health reform. The time is now. Today's nurse is being called to advocate within health care institutions, in the legislatures, in the public forums, in the community. Today's nurse must be at the table to speak up and advocate for the people who need nurse's care.

Cross-Cultural Challenges In the International Business Management


The company where I was working was taken over by a British multinational company in the mid 1990s. The newly appointed Managing Director from UK, during one of his visits to the plant, inquired how Gujarati people eat food at home. Having heard the response, he decided to sit down on the floor and have Gujarati food, along with all the senior collections of the plant.

What was the Managing Director trying to do? He was trying to appreciate the cultural norms of the new place and show his willingness to embrace. Such a behavior by the Managing Director obviously helped the local management open up more during subsequent discussions.

In the last 2 decades, cross-cultural challenges in the international business management have become prominent as the companies have started expanding across the territorial boundaries. Even leading management schools in India have started incorporating cross-cultural challenges as part of the curriculum of the international business management.

"Culture" being one of my interest areas, I recently had accepted an invitation to educate the students of a Diploma program on the International Business Management, on the topic of cross-cultural challenges. For my preparations, I browsed through many books on the subject. My knowledge-base got enriched substantively as the treasure of information contained in these books, was invaluable and highly relevant.

This article is an effort to present, some of the relevant issues related to the cross-cultural challenges in the International Business Management.

What is "Culture"?

Culture is the "acquired knowledge that people use to anticipate events and interpret experiences for generating acceptable social & professional behaviors. This knowledge forms values, creates attitudes and influences behaviors". Culture is learned through experiences and shared by a large number of people in the society. Further, culture is transferred from one generation to another.

What are the core components of "Culture"?

  • Power distribution – Whether the members of the society follow the hierarchical approach or the egalitarian ideology?
  • Social relationships – Are people more individualistic or they believe in collectivism?
  • Environmental relationships – Do people exploit the environment for their socioeconomic purposes or do they strive to live in harmony with the surroundings?
  • Work patterns – Do people perform one task at a time or do they take up multiple tasks at a time?
  • Uncertainty & social control – Whether the members of the society like to avoid uncertainty and be rule-bound or whether the members of the society are more relationship-based and like to deal with the uncertainties as and when they arise?

What are the critical issues that generally surface in cross-cultural teams?

  • Inadequate trust – For example, on one hand a Chinese manager wonders why his Indian teams speak in Hindi in the office and on the other hand, his teammates argue that when the manager is not around, why can not speak in English?
  • Perception – For instance, people from advanced countries consider people from less-developed countries inferior or vice-versa.
  • Inaccurate biases – For example, "Japanese people make decisions in the group" or "Indians do not deliver on time", are too generalized versions of cultural prejudices.
  • False communication – For example, during discussions, Japanese people nod their heads more as a sign of politeness and not necessarily as an agreement to what is being talked about.

What are the communication styles that are influenced by the culture of the nation?

  • 'Direct' or 'Indirect' – The messages are explicit and straight in the 'Direct' style. However, in the 'Indirect' style, the messages are more implicit & contextual.
  • 'Elaborate' or 'Exact' or 'Succinct' – In the 'Elaborate' style, the speaker talks a lot & repeats many times. In the 'Exact' style, the speaker is precipitate with minimal repetitions and in the 'Succinct' style; the speaker uses fewer words with moderate repetitions & uses nonverbal cues.
  • 'Contextual' or 'Personal' – In the 'Contextual' style, the focus is on the speaker's title or design & hierarchical relationships. However, in the 'Personal' style, the focus is on the speaker's individual achievements & there is minimum reference to the hierarchical relationships.
  • 'Affective' or 'Instrumental' – In the 'Affective' style, the communication is more relationship-oriented and listeners need to understand meanings based on nonverbal clues. Whereas in the 'Instrumental' style, the speaker is more goal-oriented and uses direct language with minimum nonverbal cues.

What are the important nonverbal cues related to the communication among cross-cultural teams?

  • Body contact – This reflects to the hand gestures (intended / unintended), embracing, hugging, kissing, thumping on the shoulder, firmness of handshakes, etc.
  • Interpersonal distance – This is about the physical distance between two or more individuals. 18 "is considered an intimate distance, 18" to 4 'is treated as personal distance, 4' to 8 'is the acceptable social distance, and 8' is considered as the public distance.
  • Artifacts – This reflects to the use of tie pins, jewelry, and so on.
  • Para-language – This is about the speech rate, pitch, and loudness.
  • Cosmetics – This is about the use powder, fragrance, deodorants, etc.
  • Time symbolism – This is about the appropriateness of time. For example, when the proper time to call, when to start, when to finish, etc. because different countries are in different time zones.


"Cross-cultural challenges in international business management", has become a keenly followed topic in last two decades. There are enough examples of business failures or stagnation or failure of joint ventures, on account of the management's inability to recognize cross-cultural challenges and tackle them appropriately. There are also examples of companies having compulsory training on culture management or acculturation programs for employees being sent abroad as or hired from other countries, to ensure that cross-challenges are tackled effectively.

The world is becoming smaller day-by-day and therefore, managers involved in the international businesses will have to become more sensitive to the challenges emanating from the cultural and ethnic landscape of the countries they work in.

Ignoring cultural challenges while managing internal businesses is a risky proposition because the stakes are high. It is cognate to the "Hygiene" factor of the "Dual-factor Motivation" theory developed by psychologist Frederick Herzberg in the mid 1960s. In management of the international business, embracing the cultural diversity of the country may or may not bring success, but not doing so will certainly increase the chances of stagnation or failure.
